About flatwork and driveways
A driveway carries vehicle loads over ground that moves with moisture. Thickness and reinforcement handle the load; a properly compacted sub-base handles the movement. Skipping the base is the single most common reason a driveway looks fine for two years and then cracks along its length.
Drainage is designed, not hoped for. Flatwork needs a fall away from buildings, and the finished level has to tie into what is already there — thresholds, existing paths, kerbs and gullies. Getting that wrong is much harder to correct than getting the finish wrong.
The surface finish is a decision about grip, appearance and maintenance. Broom finishes give texture on slopes; smooth trowel suits interiors; salt, exposed aggregate and stamped finishes trade some maintenance for appearance. Colour and stamp matching on a partial replacement is genuinely difficult, because existing concrete has weathered.
Joints again decide where cracks go. On a driveway, control joints are usually cut in panels that keep each section roughly square, with isolation joints where the slab meets a garage, a path or a kerb.
What flatwork and driveways work involves
Where there is existing concrete, it is saw-cut, broken out and taken away before anything else happens.

No two jobs price the same. These are the things that move the number, and they should each appear as a line on a written quote.

- Site access, and whether a pump is needed

What to ask before you hire
- Ask for the contractor's licence number and current insurance certificates, and check them yourself.
- Insist on an itemised quote rather than a single lump sum — thickness, reinforcement, prep, finish and haul-off should each have a line.
- Ask whether the crew on site works for the company or is brokered out, and who your point of contact is on pour day.
- Ask what the sub-base preparation is, what reinforcement is specified, and how joints will be laid out. Vague answers are the warning sign.
- Ask what happens if the work fails later, and whether that answer is written into the contract rather than said on the doorstep.
- Ask for recent references for the same kind of work in your area, and call one.
What goes wrong on these jobs

- Water sitting on a patio or running back towards a building.
- Surface scaling where the finish was closed too early.
- New concrete that does not match the colour or stamp of the old.
- Trip hazards where a new slab meets an existing path at the wrong level.

Around 4″ for cars is common, more where heavier vehicles are expected — but thickness only works over a properly compacted base.
Approximately. Existing concrete has weathered, so a match is closest when a whole panel is replaced rather than a patch.
Concrete keeps gaining strength for weeks. The contractor pouring it should tell you the figures for the mix they used.
